The lubricaton of the Model A engine is by pump, gravity feed and splash. The oil pump is of the rotary gear type located in the sump of the crankcase and is constantly submerged in oil. When a pump is located above the oil level, a check valve is required to hold the pump's prime, and this becomes ineffective through dirt getting under the seat of the valve or through air in the feed line running from the pump to the oil sump. The Model A oil pump, protected in this way, and with it's simple, sturdy construction, eliminates the need for an oil gauge. An oil gauge is an indication that the system of oil circulation is not reliable.
