The Judging Standards And Restoration Guidelines describes thirteen different instruction manuals. There are five variations of the 1928 manual alone. There are also books with minor variations of these thirteen, bringing the actual total to eighteen books. The descriptions are confusing to some, so I've assembled a collection of photos of the seven major variations for 1928-29 and the six 1930-31. The arrows point out the differences mentioned in the standards. You will have to check the MAFCA site or your copy of the judging standards for the details of which book goes with which month and year. The differences in the books are mainly the copyright date, the type and location of the emergency brake (ebrake) handle, the shape of the gear shift knob and the type of clutch, instrument panel, and firewall/carb. Consult the standards for details on month and year of usage, and for a complete description. When choosing the book for judging, select the year and month that you have stated for your car. As pointed out to me, the tool judges do not look at the car to see if the book matches the car itself, only the date specified. You can find more information, and information on determining the difference between original and reproduction manuals, at the MAFCA site and at Bob Johnson's site. While you're at both sites, check out the rest of the pages. Thanks to Don Turley for most of the photos. Don has several manuals and parts for sale at his site www.donturley.com |

Not mentioned in the standards, but visible here, is the metal and felt seal at the top of the shorter spring in the shift tower. These parts were found in the earlier shift towers. |

Also note the metal and felt seal at the top of the shift tower is now gone, and shows just the longer spring. |
