MODEL A BOOKS

In my opinion, the following are THE six books (actually five books and a series of six books), and two magazines that are necessary in the library of any Model A owner. If you own a Model A, I feel these books will not only be invaluable, but also a great read.

The first book on the list is referred to as 'The Standards'. While many feel it isn't necessary for a 'driver' to be restored to the detail of the judging standards, I've always felt that it is just as easy to do it 'right' as close enough.

This book will help to determine what part was originally used on your particular month and year and model of car.
Wonder why the spare tire sits funny on the car? Maybe you have the wrong carrier. What is the correct colors for an October 1928 Tudor? It's in the standards.

The second 'must have' book is the 'Model A Ford Service Bulletins'. It is available in the hardbound version shown, and both the Model A Restorers Club (MARC), and The Model A Ford Club of America (MAFCA) have excellent reprints available. The hardbound book has all the bulletins, but is much smaller in size and is missing the cover page issued with each month's service bulletin. The clubs have published a reproduction of the originals in full size and with an original style cover.

The service bulletins have many of the changes that occurred over the production period of the Model A, and hints, tips, and methods of work used by the dealers. Do you have a squeak in the cowl of your car? The 'Service Bulletins' shows the 'official' repair.

The third book on my list is actually a series of six books published by MAFCA, and is a reprint of the best articles found over the years in The Restorer, the official magazine of MAFCA. It is a great collection of 'how to's ', and answers to many questions.

How do I rebuild the rear end on my car? My brakes aren't up to par, what should I do? Anybody have pictures of the firewall grommets? It's all in this series of books.

The fourth book on my 'must have' list is the "Model A Ford Paint and Finish Guide" from MAFCA. If you want the most accurate paint chips available, drawings of where the paint goes (what the heck is considered the molding and revels), and great background information on the finish of the Model A, this is 'THE' book.

The next book on my list is the original parts book.    Marco Tahtaras has a great description of Ford parts numbers and the parts books available here.

I'd like to add one additional book to the list. The book is 'The Ford Model A, As Henry Built It'.
It is an excellent book to introduce you to the history and production of the Model A Ford. It is a wealth of original photos and information on the Model A. I understand that it is again in print and available through many of the parts houses.

The two magazines on my list? 'The Model A Restorer's Club News', and 'The Restorer'. If you receive both of these magazines, it means you belong to both national clubs, and you will have supported the efforts of these clubs to supply the best information possible on the restoration and enjoyment of the Model A Ford. You will also receive each bi-monthly magazines with the latest information and 'how to' articles.

The following is a new book..to me. I got my copy of "The Model A Generator with special sections on the Model A Starter, The Model A Cutout, The Model A starter Switch" by Paul H. Mcree & William H. Mcree from Ross Macleod of  Valley Vintage Auto(click here for his web site) . It is an excellent book of 60 pages packed with information on the the rebuilding and testing of the the Model A generators and Starters. I especially liked the information on the powerhouse generators, which I've not seen elsewhere. If you are considering rebuilding the starter or generator on you A..this is the book to have.

The following book was one of the first that I bought. While the other books are 'must haves', this has always been a favorite of mine, just for the fun of it. It's probably not for everyone but....
