STANDARD FORD BODY AND PARTS NUMBERS
  Ford assigned a body number to each of the various body styles. The following is a list of Model A numbers and styles from the Ford Illustrated Catalogue- Chassis Parts and Accessories 1928-1938 and the Automotive Hardware and Trimming Supplies 1928-1938.

Ford Describes it's number as system like this:

The Ford numbering system is designed so that similar parts for each type of vehicle will be the same number or in the same group. These groups are designated by the thousand figure for each part number and start from the ground or with the wheels, the part numbers of which are from 1000 up. The brakes are in the second group, the part numbers being from 2000 up, and so on. You will find the chassis parts are divided into functional groups as shown in the following list:
